This thesis is truly my passion project - four months of deep research, heart, and a vision for a more ethical fashion world. It dives into the intricate relationship between fashion brands and India’s Indigenous communities, focusing on the use of traditional designs through a legal lens.
The work sheds light on how existing legal systems fall short in protecting Indigenous knowledge, leaving communities exposed to exploitation. It critically examines India’s current legal framework, explores the importance of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC), and reviews key government initiatives.
Most importantly, it proposes thoughtful amendments to the Forest Rights Act of 2006 to safeguard Indigenous designs and outlines how ethical collaborations between fashion brands and communities can lead to truly respectful, mutually beneficial partnerships.
